The Insignia of Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ of Marshall of the Empire Michel Ney (1805)

by José Vicente de Bragança, the Academy’s Vice-President
Edited in Portuguese, French and English with a précis in Russian

74 pages with illustrations.

Abstract

The study outlines the historical importance of the set of the Grand Cross insignia of the Military Order of Christ which were awarded to Michel Ney, Marshall of the Empire, in 1805, sold at an auction in Paris, in 2012.

Reviewing the origins of the creation of the Grand Cross class in the ancient Portuguese Military Orders, in 1789, and describing its insignia, the book analyses the available sources, namely of iconographic nature, that enable to establish the pattern of the first Badge of the Grand Cross class (1789), while reminding that none is known to have survived, except for insignia-jewels of the Portuguese monarchs.

Comparing Marshall Ney’s badge of the Grand Cross with the images of badges contemporary with the Reform of the Orders in 1789, including the one with which Goya painted D. Manuel Godoy, in 1801, the book stresses its importance as one of the oldest with an established provenance.

Ney’s embroidered Star of the Order included in the auction, and another which belongs to the collections of the State Hermitage Museum, at St. Petersburg are also studied emphasizing its value as phaleristic very rare pieces. Finally, a brief outline of the tragic end of Marshall Michel Ney, one the great generals of the Napoleonic era is given.
