Viriato Gomes da Fonseca (1863-1942), General of the Army, born on Santo Antão Island, in the archipelago of Cape Verde, at the time a Portuguese colony. In addition to his military career, having proved his value in combat as an Artillery Officer, he was also a distinguished politician (having been elected Member of Parliament in several legislatures), as well as a relevant topographical surveyor and, also an accomplished musician, these artistic gifts being highly appreciated by King D. Carlos I and Queen D. Amélia.
